Last weekend we had our first “Pilates in the Wild” retreat hosted by El Karama and I really could not have hoped for it to go any better. Three lovely ladies took a leap of faith and signed up – THANKYOU ladies you know who you are.
El Karama is one of my favorite little break-aways, but it is looking fabulous with new soft furnishings and special touches in the rooms which make all the difference. The two new river cottages are really lovely, and have been decorated beautifully.
The lodge is under new management, a gorgeous young couple Della and Rich, both passionate about what they are doing. Della was born in Nanyuki Cottage Hospital and so she is right at home in Laikipa and Rich is a complete gent full of knowledge from the wildlife to the engineering of the lodge. They really could not have been more helpful or hospitable and the team are working extremely well under their guidance.
I have to devote a whole paragraph to the food, because it was AMAZING. Most of it fresh from the El Karama kitchen garden. Breakfast was a feast every morning, with homemade date balls, rusks followed by buck wheat pancakes and beautiful yellow yolk eggs from the family chickens with avos on toast. Wonderful fresh and delicious salads at lunch time full of flavour and perfectly simple evening meals. At every meal there were fresh juices, infusions and herbal teas, and afternoon tea was accompanied by yummy gluten free treats.
The weekend was very relaxed and flexible, we managed Pilates, game walks, game drives and even some pool time. The location of the pilates by the pool is perfect, with the birds chattering away in the background and the sound of the very full river rushing by – over the friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday morning, we fitted in 4 classes. I introduced some different props to keep the classes interesting and we even found time to do the Holistic Core Restore® pelvic floor and core workshop on the Saturday afternoon.
Jackie from Beyond Beauty at Le Rustique joined us for Saturday and Sunday. She does a mean massage which was great for a post exercise wind down. She has lovely hands and really manages to find the little knots, I would highly recommend her massage. She was also able to do the usual mani/pedi pampering too.
We would love to do this again, if you are interested in getting a group of people together please let me know, and we can plan a bespoke weekend of flexibility, fitness and fun for you. A group of 8-10 would be perfect. I really want to stress that this is NOT just about the Pilates and could equally as easily be a weekend for all the family – there is so much for children of all ages, partners etc outside of the couple of hours of Pilates each day.
This is what the ladies had to say:
Fabulous weekend in beautiful El Karama, wildlife, weather and Pilates! The lodge is relaxed, comfortable and brilliantly hosted by a friendly and accommodating team, situated in gorgeous grounds full of game. The Pilates was great, hard work but satisfying. I shall hear “lift, lift, lift” for weeks in my dreams, thank you Ali!!
First Pilates retreat I have done, and loved it. Ali is a great instructor, whom beside the high amount of pushing, also takes the time to explain how all the muscles work. As for El Karama I couldn’t have wished for a better venue. Everything was perfect but particularly the food! Great company as well.
Thanks Ali, Della and Rich and I would definitely sign up for the next one!
I had such a lovely weekend. Very well organised, I enjoyed the Pilates lessons and workshop. Ali is a very qualified and experienced and inspiring teacher. The lodge is lovely, the home grown food excellent – organic, original and healthy – and the staff very heplful and pleasant. The game drives and walk were nice as well. I would thoroughly recommend this weekend retreat “Pilates in the Wild”. Thank you.
